Gum/Candy programs long helped charities like Jerry's Kids, Kiwanis, etc. This is an extremely rare complete unit that was made specifically to raise money for children with Down Syndrome. 50-70 years ago it was normal to refer to afflicted children as being "retarded". The administrators of this program had the special embossed lid and water transfer decal advertisement raising money for Down Syndrome. It says "Retarded Children Can be Helped". These lids by themselves are the rarest variety but when it is coupled with this decal on a machine that survived in this great of condition, it really is unbelievable. The decal reads, "Help Retarded Children, has a picture of a sad looking boy, and advertises that the funds go to a Tennessee chapter of the charity. The word "retarded" may not be politically correct anymore but millions of dollars were raised for down syndrome through this program. Own this piece of Americana and you will have the rarest version of the Oak Acorn machine that we have ever come across. This is a piece for many types of collections including vending, Americana, weird history, political incorrectness, and could possibly be a museum piece to display how the world has changed. This machine also includes the original adjustable metal candy vending wheel and a made in the USA stamped Chicago lock and key.
